Chain Smoker, Tap Dancer
TWO MONITOR VHS VIDEO INSTALLATION WITH SOUND. LOOPED (1995)
Chain Smoker – Tap Dancer was Forsyth & Pollard’s first video work. It was made in the first few months of beginning their collaboration and formed part of their BA degree show at Goldsmiths in 1995.
Made for two monitors, one screen is presented at floor level, the other at standing head height. The upper monitor features Forsyth’s head presented life-size, chain smoking. The monitor on the ground presents Pollard’s feet, again life-size, tap dancing.
Both were shot in a single take and play on a continuous loop, the soundtrack provided by the clapping of Pollard’s silver tap shoes. An early experiment in self-portraiture, the work is an entertaining cross-breed of teenage notions of ‘rock and roll cool’ and seaside amateur dramatics.
